Of the 15 pediatric specialties offered on the Colorado Medicaid eConsult Platform, pediatric dermatology is one of the most frequently accessed, providing timely specialist guidance for common skin conditions and helping avoid unnecessary in-person referrals.
Since the launch of the Colorado Medicaid eConsult Platform (2/1/24):
- 91 pediatric dermatology eConsults have been submitted
- 92% have been managed without an in-person specialist visit
- Average specialist response time: less than 1 day
Common Pediatric Dermatology eConsult Topics
Common pediatric dermatology eConsult topics include:
- Rashes or skin irritation
- Treatment resistant acne
- Suspected skin infections
- Pigmented lesions or changing moles
- Urticaria or allergic reactions
Skin conditions often change quickly, and dermatology access can be limited in many regions. eConsult enables Referring Providers to confirm diagnoses, adjust treatment, and determine when a referral is necessary, while maintaining care within the medical home and avoiding delays in management.
When to Use eConsult vs. Refer
Use eConsult for routine, non-urgent clinical questions when:
- Guidance is needed to confirm diagnosis or adjust treatment
- The condition is stable or chronic
- Additional input may help avoid or delay referral
- Relevant history, photos, or test results are available
Refer directly when:
- The condition is urgent or rapidly worsening
- There is concern for malignancy or serious disease
- The patient requires immediate specialty care

Since launching in February 2024, the Colorado Medicaid eConsult Platform has supported 1,500+ eConsults for 1300+ unique Medicaid patients, with utilization growing nearly 40% year over-year and almost half of eligible practices now enrolled in the program.
