Colorado Medicaid eConsult Program

Over 1000 eConsults Submitted Since Program Launch!

Since the launch of the Colorado Medicaid eConsult Program, providers across the state have submitted over 1,000 eConsults, connecting Medicaid members to timely specialty guidance without the need for in-person visits.

Even more impactful: 90% of these eConsults have been closed with clinical guidance for the PCMP to carry out next steps in care, helping avoid the need for a specialist visit altogether

This milestone reflects the growing adoption of eConsult as a valuable tool to improve access, support clinical decision-making, and streamline care for Medicaid members. Thank you for being part of this progress!

Better Health, Closer to Home: Clinica Family Health’s Role in Expanding Access

Clinica Family Health & Wellness has been a cornerstone of care for underserved communities in both Urban and Rural parts of Colorado for nearly 50 years. The Community Health Center provides affordable medical, dental, and behavioral health services to individuals and families who might otherwise go without. Serving a large population of Medicaid members, Clinica focuses on preventive, culturally responsive care to ensure all individuals can access the health services they need to live healthy, stable lives.

Clinica Family Health stands out as a leader in recognizing the value of innovative care delivery, exemplified by its early and consistent use of the Colorado Medicaid eConsult platform. The clinics have completed over 125 eConsults across 22 specialties, spanning both adult and pediatric care, demonstrating its commitment to improving access, reducing delays, and enhancing outcomes for its diverse Medicaid population.

Dr. Lisa Winkler, Vice President of Medical Services – Strategic Programs, shared her thoughts about how eConsults have supported both providers and patients.

“Rolling out the eConsult Platform has been transformational for our providers! The responses from specialists are both comprehensive and timely, which makes the service a crucial part of helping our primary care providers expand their scope of care. For our newer providers in particular, this service supports clinical decision making and reduces the need for face-to-face referrals. The eConsult Platform has also expedited recommended specialty care for patients since they don’t need to wait weeks for an in-person appointment. All in all, this program is an invaluable resource for both our teams and patients!”

– Dr. Lisa Winkler, Vice President of Medical Services – Strategic Programs

Dr. Kaitlin Prinsen from Clinica Family Health, Pecos Clinic, submitted a Pediatric Dermatology eConsult with photos for a patient, requesting a differential diagnosis and treatment recommendations. Within 3 hours, she was provided specialty clinical advice and here is her feedback.

“I really appreciate the suspected diagnosis, time frame of resolution and treatment recommendations and when to refer if not improving. Very prompt and helpful!”

– Dr. Kaitlin Prinsen, Clinica Family Health

New! Billing Job Aid Available in User Guides and Info Section

Treating practitioners using the Colorado Medicaid eConsult platform can bill for interprofessional consultations using CPT code 99452, a benefit under Health First Colorado as of February 1, 2024. This code is applicable for claims-based reimbursement to PCMPs who submit Fee-For-Service claims to Health First Colorado.

Costs associated with services provided by eConsult visits through an FQHC/RHC are considered allowable costs for the cost report and will be included in the calculation of the reimbursement rate for a patient visit at an FQHC/RHC. The interprofessional consult code applies when a PCMP (MD, DO, NP, PA) coordinates care through an eConsult. To bill successfully, providers must document patient consent (verbal or written) for each consultation, the reason for the eConsult, and maintain a record of the completed consultation in the patient’s medical chart.

The Colorado Medicaid eConsult platform supports these billing requirements by offering integrated tools that help providers track time spent, document patient consent, and generates a downloadable summary of the eConsult for inclusion in the medical record. These features make it easier for treating practitioners to meet compliance standards while ensuring continuity of care.

To assist providers further, a Billing Job Aid is available for active users to download from the User Guides and Info section on the Landing Page of the Platform: (https://www.coloradomedicaideconsult.com/).
